My favourite jewellery designer Samantha Wills had one of her infamous sales over the New Year. Some styles were seriously marked down (60% off) so I was able to pick up some great statement jewellery for a very cheap price.

I’d had my eye on the Helen of Troy necklace (was $145, now $58) for a while…

…it has a luxurious Cleopatra feel to it and would really pop against navy, which I wear a lot of. Imagine a Friday night drinks outfit of blazer, skinny jeans, statement heels and this necklace.

I really like tribal and aztec accessories, so the Adelpha Coin Ring (was $59, now $23) was a natural choice…

…it looks like something I would seal my letters with!

SABA Collins Street VIP Night

A few Fridays ago, SABA had a Christmas VIP Night at their flagship store on Collins Street. I was lucky enough to attend and be spoiled rotten!

Shoppers were invited to indulge in some champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries as they browsed the summer range, and the first 50 people in the door were treated to a showbag. The showbag was great – it had a scarf that I’d had my eye on for quite some time (the Nile Scarf in Ultramarine, RRP $69), as well as deluxe samples of Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Primer and Kora Hand Balm and a full-size SABA-branded lip balm.

In addition to all this, SABA offered 35% off storewide. After reading this article on the quality of SABA’s black pants in comparison to other brands, I decided that I would purchase the Viva Suit Pant, but unfortunately they didn’t have my size. To the staff’s credit, and despite the growing crowd, they helped me locate a pair at Melbourne Central. Great service!

I didn’t hang around too long because it was so hot and stuffy – the new store layout is much nicer to look at but is unfortunately a lot smaller so there wasn’t much room to move. I picked up the Basic Slub Print T-shirt which is part of the SABA Denim range. I wish SABA would make more basic t-shirts, this one was great quality and fit really nicely. I’m planning on wearing it on Christmas Day with some denim shorts.

One thing I spend a lot of my money on is makeup. It’s taken me many years of trial and error to find products that perform well enough that I’m happy to put them on my face every day. Unfortunately, a lot of them are department store brands, so I’ve had to be a bit thriftier in my procurement methods to avoid going broke.

I don’t like shopping at the counter. I find it intimidating and feel like I’m being pressured to buy stuff that I don’t need. I’ll go there when I’m in urgent need of something (e.g. I’ve totally run out of foundation), but instead I usually put in one or two big orders a year from US stores such as Sephora and Nordstrom, avoiding the need to speak to sales assistants and saving myself a fortune.

Sephora held their annual Friends and Family 20% off sale in November, so I decided to use it as an opportunity to stock up on my every-day makeup items as well as pick up a couple of cheap gifts for Christmas. I also needed some MAC so I paid a virtual visit to Nordstrom. Fiona at Shopaholiques helped me out with parcel forwarding (Nordstrom) and assisted purchasing (Sephora) services.

See below for item listing and price comparisons.

(Note: I bought all of this when $1 AUD = $1 USD. All prices include discounts and sales tax/GST)

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Deauville ($35.95 USD vs $79 AUD)

NARS Pro-Prime Multi-Protect Primer ($27.39 USD vs $69 AUD)

NARS Illuminator in Orgasm ($24.82 USD vs $58 AUD)

NARS Illuminator in Copacabana ($24.82 USD vs $58 AUD)

Stila Lip Glaze Set ($21.40 USD vs $65 AUD)

L’Occitane Hand Cream Confections ($34.24 USD vs n/a)

NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna ($28.24 USD vs $55 AUD)

Clinique Cream Shaper for Eyes in Egyptian ($16.05 USD vs $32 AUD)

Le Metier de Beaute ‘Creme Fresh’ Tint for Lip and Cheek ($29.96 USD vs n/a)

MAC Brow Set ($16.05 USD vs $28 AUD)

MAC Prep and Prime Transparent Pressed Powder ($24.61 USD vs $42 AUD)

MAC 150 Large Powder Brush ($44.94 USD vs $85 AUD)

Le Metier de Beaute ‘Flawless Face’ Kaleidoscope Face Kit ($101.65 USD vs n/a)

As you can see, there’s quite a difference in price between Australia and the US, with most items around half the price. Shipping to Australia and insurance cost around $55 USD and I paid $24 for parcel forwarding and purchasing services from Shopaholiques but I still think I came out miles ahead. It was also a great opportunity to access brands and products that aren’t available here (i.e. Le Metier de Beaute).

Adore Beauty held their online Christmas VIP event on 7 December with a tonne of great offers including free shipping, gifts with purchase and discounts on a huge range of products. The event ran for 24 hours which gave me plenty of time to mull over my purchases. I couldn’t resist putting in an order – it was a great opportunity to snap up a few last minute gifts.

This is what I ended up with:

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh EDT (20ml + 15ml refill) $40 (for my colleagues)

OPI Avojuice Hand and Body Lotion in Peach $19.95 (for me!)

I got free shipping because I spent over $99 and I got a free gift for spending over $49 which was AMAZING! It had four mini body butters from MOR, a Guinot body lotion and a Clarins body wash. These will be great for taking on holidays. I also got the usual two samples and sweet treat which are always a nice touch. Delivery was super quick – I ordered at 3pm on Wednesday and my package arrived first thing Friday morning!

I love that VIP nights have spread to online sales as well – no crowds, no jostling at the testers and no waits to checkout. It’s such a pleasant experience shopping from the comfort of the desk or the couch and it allows me to make far more rational purchasing decisions because I can easily research items and compare prices on other sites.

Haul: StrawberryNET

I accidentally hauled from StrawberryNET the other day. My boyfriend ran out of Clinique Oil Control Hydrator but it was discontinued**, so while I searched through the site for a replacement, I couldn’t help but pick up a few extra items that I’d had my eye on for a while. Oops!

Stila Eye Shadow Pan in Cloud ($16)  – a shimmery grey/silver/taupe/beige shade, great as a base. Don’t be surprised by the packaging – this eye shadow is a refill and is made for those people who already have the empty palettes.

MAC Eye Shadow Palette in “Beauties Play It Cool” ($43.50) – from Holiday 2010, a palette of shimmery smoky purples  including Silverwear (frost), Hold My Gaze (frost), To The Ball (satin), Altered State (veluxe pearl), Magic Moor (veluxe pearl) and Heather Belles (satin). Also includes a mini 213SE brush.

Here’s a picture of the inside of the palette:

Head to to get your hands on your own beauty bargain!

** Surely it couldn’t have been that unpopular?! It was the only product in the men’s range that specifically dealt with oily skin. We managed to find a good replacement in Clarins Man Shine-Free Gel – it’s a little more expensive ($36) but does the job just as well.

I didn’t think I could be any happier than when Geelong beat Collingwood in the grand final…

…then Adore Beauty put the icing on the cake, offering free shipping on orders over $50 with the code GOCATS.

This was my first Adore Beauty order and it came in record time – next day delivery! Here’s what I picked up:

butter LONDON Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator – $24.95 – My new resolution is to save money by doing my nails at home.

butter LONDON ‘Fash Pack’ Nail Lacquer – $19.95 – I never bought Chanel Particuliere, I’m hoping this is the dupe I’m looking for!

Tweezerman Folding ILashComb – $15.95 – A handy little tool for separating lashes.

Adore Beauty also threw in two free samples – Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant and A’kin Rose De Mai Antioxidant Day Creme – plus a little chocolate treat which was quickly snapped up by my boyfriend!
