Moonlight Cinema is back in town!

Daylight savings has started and the nights are slowly getting warmer, which means it must be almost time for Moonlight Cinema to start again, right? Going to an open-air cinema is one of my favourite things to do in summer – it’s the perfect excuse to catch up with friends in a relaxing, scenic environment. While The Rooftop in Swanston Street is a popular choice for the latest and greatest films, I prefer Moonlight Cinema for the scenery – it’s located in the perfectly picturesque Royal Botanical Gardens, complete with the infamous bats swinging in the treetops overhead!

Where is it?

Royal Botanical Gardens, Birdwood Avenue, Melbourne (Melways reference 2G A12)

Accessible by car or public transport (catch the number 8 tram from the city and get off at Park Street).

How much does it cost?

$18 for adults, $16 concession, or $11 if you join the Movie Club.

What movies do they show?

A mixture of old and cult classics as well as the latest releases.

My picks? Grease for a good ol’ fashioned sing-along, Toy Story 3 for the nieces and nephews, Top Gun to please your man or The Town for action, suspense and the gorgeous Ben Affleck!

You can view the full 2010/2011 program here:

What time does the movie start?

As soon as the sun goes down.

My tips for a great night at the movies:

  • Get there at least an hour before the movie starts so that you can get a good possie on the grass. The idea is to set up camp early and enjoy some drinks and nibbles with friends before sundown.
  • Save time by pre-booking your tickets online at
  • Hire the beanbag – if you want to be comfortable, it’s the best $7 you will ever spend!
  • Bring snacks and drinks (yes, you can BYO alcohol!) or money if you’d rather buy from the venue, insect repellant, a picnic rug and a blanket.

The 2010/2011 season commences on Thursday 16 December – visit for more information.
